Lady GaGa has suggested that the death of Osama Bin Laden is of great significance to many New Yorkers who witnessed the 9/11 terror attacks.

On Sunday, the terrorist leader was killed in Abbottabad, Pakistan by Navy SEALs as part of Operation Neptune Spear.

Appearing on Toby Knapp's Hot 99.5 radio programme in Washington DC, the 'Judas' singer recalled emerging from the city's Convent of the Sacred Heart high school on the day of the attacks to find the streets "covered in ashes".

Because her mother Cynthia worked just across the street from the World Trade Centre towers, it took GaGa and her father several hours to confirm that she hadn't been harmed when the buildings collapsed.

While GaGa cited Bin Laden's demise as a "historical moment in the fight against hatred" on her Twitter account, she was quick to note to Knapp that she doesn't believe in rejoicing the death of any human being.

"It's a difficult thing - nobody wants to celebrate anyone's death," the musician said. "But I know it was something that meant a lot to the people of New York, especially those who lost lives that day."
